Frequently Asked Questions
Is this health insurance?
No. OneShare Health is a Health Care Sharing Ministry, not insurance, and Patriot Share is not an insurance company. A health care sharing membership is not an insurance policy, and members are not “insured.” OneShare Health facilitates the sharing of medical bills among its members, and sharing of any particular bill is not guaranteed.
Health care sharing memberships don’t have to meet the rules that apply to Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans. Please review the Membership Guidelines carefully and decide whether health care sharing is the right fit for you before joining.
Programs are not available in MA, MD, MT, NM, PA, WA, WI or VT.
How does sharing work?
- See a provider. Start with 24/7 virtual urgent care ($0 Visit Fee), or choose a provider. The First Health Network has more than 982,000 providers and 5,300 hospitals nationwide.
- Show your member ID card. Your electronic ID card is in the Member Portal right away, and a printed card arrives by mail 12 to 15 days after your Active Date.
- Medical bills are submitted for sharing. The back of your ID card tells providers where to send bills. If a provider asks you to pay up front, ask for a cash-pay discount and send your receipts with the Expense Sharing Request Form in the Member Portal.
- Eligibility and price are determined. OneShare Health reviews the bill under the Membership Guidelines and applies the network discount. You pay your Visit Fee or Individual Sharing Amount (ISA), and the eligible amount is shared.
- The request is fulfilled. Payment goes to the provider, or to you if you paid and are due a reimbursement. You and your provider both get an Explanation of Sharing.
Hospital stays, outpatient surgery, maternity and cancer treatment require Pre-Notification to OneShare Health before care.
Who can join?
OneShare Health has programs for individuals, families and small businesses, for ages up to 64. Child-only memberships are available for children under 18, with a parent or legal guardian completing the application. To join, you must:
- Agree to and live by OneShare Health’s Statement of Beliefs. The application doesn’t ask about your religion or denomination, and no church membership or pastoral approval is needed.
- Not have used tobacco in any form or illegal drugs in the 12 months before applying.
- Live in a state where programs are offered. Programs are not available in MA, MD, MT, NM, PA, WA, WI or VT.
